For Days and Years

And therein lies the basic, everyday value of the lights in the heavens. Without them, especially without the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night, we would not be able to maintain any kind of schedule or orderly progress.

The Hebrew word translated “rule” is memshalah. This term speaks of a realm or a ruler. It is very different from the commands to “subdue” and “have dominion,” terms that were used to describe the stewardship authority given to mankind (Genesis 1:26, 28). The sun and the moon were to “have a realm of authority” defined by the Creator. The sun “presides” over the “day,” and the moon “oversees” the “night.” Neither one of them subdues or has dominion because man is the delegated authority to rule the earth. Yet both of them clearly “preside” in their spheres of authority. No “normal” life would be possible without their continual and faithful function.

Suppose that God had merely left the “light” of the first day beaming down from someplace outside the edge of the universe. We would have the “evening and morning” that existed from the beginning of Day One, but we would have no clear reference, no observable means of identifying the passage of time. Yes, there would be light and dark cycles, but no points to refer to, no phases of seasonal recognition, no “clock” to mark the greater spans of time.

The events of the fourth day were very important.
